More Puerto Maldonado

Miguel and I goofing around.

My time staying at the Fauna Forever house in Puerto Maldonado has been pretty fun and relaxing. Other than the animal shelter there has been a lot of relaxing and just getting to know some of the people here. We eat out at restaurants for lunch and dinner generally. Attempted to get internet back at the house though often failed. Not having internet in a place that supposedly has internet can be very frustrating. Particularly if you need to do things such as book flights or just want to do things like blog posts. There are internet cafes in town that you can get internet at for just 2 soles an hour so if I was desperate I could do that. However, as my Aussie friend Sarah would say, “I just can’t be bothered.”

One night I went to an exercise class with Nya, the daughter of one of the head honchos, who is 8. It was called Capoirea. It was actually really cool it is a fascinating cross between martial arts and dance. Very elegant and yet also pretty fun to see the kids spar. I felt a bit absurd because I was the only adult in the room with the oldest kid being 8. However, it was pretty cool because the guy leading was very friendly and actually really customized the lesson to each skill level.

Another night I went to the gym with Ian and Matt which was fairly amusing as pretty much the only thing to do at the gym is lift weights. I would lift weights with them but majorly decrease the load. It felt a little silly to lift tiny weights, but it was good for me.

Tomorrow I go into the jungle. Got the safety briefing today which was informative. Don’t attempt to sunbathe and swim in the lake with the black caimans. Look before you machete, and such like that. I am pretty excited though to get into work, though, and completely tune out from the modern world. It should be pretty interesting. Anyways, thanks for reading, and see you in a month!

About Meg LaFollette

I studied abroad in Fiji for 5 months in 2012 and absolutely fell in love with traveling! I went to New Zealand right after and then Peru this summer. When not traveling (and sometimes during) I love healthy, environmentally conscious living. Animals, biology, horses, and behavior are other passions of mine.
